To find out more about the ongoing RaISE trial of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) for young people with anorexia nervosa, visit our trial information page here and email amelia.1.hemmings@kcl.ac.uk to learn more and take part!
We asked some of out current and former participants to provide some short testimonials to allow others interested in taking part in the RaISE trial to get a better idea of what participation is like!
Here's what three of our participants have to say about their experience:
1. What was your overall experience of taking part in the RaISE trial?
P1: "Overall, I felt the team was there to support me and tried to make me feel comfortable. Any worries about discomfort during the procedure were quickly assuaged as the team helped me in adjusting the frequency and taking care in identifying the best placement"
P2: "Overall my experience of taking part in the RaISE trial was an extremely positive one. Every step was thoroughly explained by the researchers whom both made my involvement a pleasurable one. I always felt comfortable during every session I had with both the researchers and being a psychology student myself, it was insightful for me to be a part of another’s research that hopefully one day I might be conducting myself!"
P3: "I can’t thank the researchers enough for giving me the opportunity to take part in RaISE, they were so welcoming and accommodating throughout the trial! They made the experience so manageable and kept me informed with everything I needed. The sessions were scheduled flexibly around my availability which was massively appreciated :)"
2. How did the stimulation feel?
P1: "Sensations experienced during treatment were minor, and were only felt during stimulation. I am impressed with how quick and non-invasive each session was, and these qualities appealed to me as an alternative to medications."
P2: "At first I found the stimulation a little unpleasant but this lessened with each session. After around the first week I only felt a tingling sensation on my scalp!"
P3: "The stimulation sessions were quick and easy - really non-invasive and painless!"
3. What would you say to other people who are interested in taking part in RaISE?
P1: "I would refer to a friend who wanted to explore a different treatment alongside therapy that is not invasive or that is remiss of the possible intolerable side-effects of medication."
P2: "I would definitely say to “just go for it”, it’s a valuable experience and being a part of research that might even benefit yourself, for me is a no brainer. It’s brilliant to see the uptake/interest for research into eating disorders, it was a pleasure to take part!"
P3: "If you’re even vaguely contemplating taking part - go for it! There’s nothing to lose and a better life to possibly gain from taking the plunge!"
